The Guv’nor writes… I was saddened to read in The Times of the death of Phillip Madoc, the Welsh actor. He was one of the small band of actors that I admired personally as both an artist and a man. For an actor he was a very centred person he had a beautiful deep, Welsh-tinged baritone voice – and always a smile.
He was a very fine actor.
Strangely enough, of all the great amount of distinguished work he did on the screen and in the theatre, he’s best remembered for playing a German u-boat captain captured by Dad’s Army.
His performance dominates the whole episode.
Goodbye Phillip and thank you.
