The Guv’nor writes…
“Football or Rugby: which is ‘more Hornets’?
My answer: both.
I’m reminded of the old cliché: Rugby is a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen; Football is a gentleman’s game played by hooligans. A fun line, but things are always more complicated than cliché will allow.
By the way, when I say football I mean, of course, soccer. American Football I know very little about, except that to my eye it looks like girly rugby, they get all that gear on so they don’t get hurt.
(The Man From The Hornet interjects: please address all complaints on the above comment in writing to Wallace, c/o 4 Church Walk, Kensington W8. Thanks.)
At rugby you get hurt. No helmets. No pads. ‘Fortes fortuna adiuvat’. Fortune Favours the Bold.
I like rugby. It’s just get out there and WIN. British bulldog spirit.
Football seems more precise – something to do with foot-to-eye coordination, I suppose. And the atmosphere in the football stadium – as I wrote a few weeks ago – is akin to the modern day coliseum. Stirring stuff.
So it’s the policy of Hornets to back both of these noble sports – particularly when the “Home Nations” of Scotland, England, Northern Ireland or Wales are involved.
And this weekend England are very much involved playing against Italy – the mighty Azzurri – in Euro 2012.
Italy v. England. If it were a competition between suits, then the Italians would defeat almost every nation on earth… except England. On the field of play, however, it looks like the odds are stacked against our boys.
But that’s the way we like it.
Good luck England.
That is all.
P.S. I’ve been digging around in the attic and I’ve unearthed a few old prints of soccer XI’s and rugby XV’s from days gone by. Real time capsules, moments frozen it time. I’ll pass ‘em on to the The Man From The Hornet and he’ll share them with you soon.”
