The collective memory of the 1960s features The Rolling Stones, free love, drugs and great clothes.

So what do you think would have been one of the main full-page ads in the 1969 Christmas issue of that bastion of the permissive society Playboy? After-shave with a picture of a half naked woman? Whisky with a picture of a half-naked woman? Ties with a half naked woman?

None of the above. Try this…

 

Socks.

The last line of the ad copy reads: “If you’re going to be a success, you may as well look like one.”

Suffice to say, we don’t think Don Draper was working on this account.
