Happy Birthday to The Guv’nor. And many more!
Bill shares his birthday with the famous baseball star “Shoeless Joe” Jackson, who was born in South Carolina in 1887.
Jackson’s name is forever associated with the “Black Sox Scandal” – the fixing of the World Series in 1919 – and with the legendary phrase said to have been uttered by a broken-hearted young fan, while tugging at Jackson’s sleeve: “Say it ain’t so, Joe.”
Further legend has it that Jackson picked up his nickname when, during a game, he slipped off his new cleats, which were giving him blisters, and played the remainder of the game in his socks.
The moral of the story is clear: buy good fitting shoes.
Happy Birthday Guv’nor!
