Ladies’ Day has been a feature of the festival at Royal Ascot since 1823.
It was in this year that one poetic soul described Gold Cup day – traditionally the Thursday – as “Ladies’ Day, when the women, like angels, look sweetly divine”. The name caught on and Ladies’ Day was born.
In 1976, Dame Edna Everage attended Ladies’ Day wearing a four-foot replica of Sydney Opera House on her head. His head. Er… her head.
