It’s In The Bag

A visit to the eccentric Museum of Bags and Purses in Amsterdam has set us a-thinking about bags…

The modern day briefcase is a descendant of the limp satchel used in the fourteenth century for carrying money and valuables. It was then called a “budget”, deriving from the Latin word “bulga” (some disagree and state, instead the Irish word “bolg”) meaning leather bag. It is from this name for the ancient briefcase that we also get the financial term “budget”.
