Is this the world’s most famous Ascot…?

The wearer is, of course, Fred Jones from the Scooby Doo cartoons. The character was created in 1969 and although he is by-and-large a lantern-jawed, all-American jock type, the counterculture influence of the times can be seen in his choice of neckwear. Just as the rockers of the 50s subverted the long coats of the Edwardian era into a uniform of rebellion, so too did formal neckwear become an unlikely badge of Hippiedom, as seen here in this pic of the young Pink Floyd…

By the 90s, we were sorry to see that Fred had abandoned the Ascot…

But the good news is that the famous orange neckwear makes a return in 2010’s Mystery Incorporated

… a lovingly detailed reboot of the original Scooby Doo characters, replete with running gags about Fred’s Ascot.

 

June is, of course, Ascot month and we’ll be dealing with the real business of Ascot formal wear, including Hornets’ opening hours, over the next two weeks.
