This Pearly Kings jacket is from the 1960’s. It’s covered in a beautiful and intricate design of Mother of Pearl buttons, with the Kings name on the back. Each Pearly was expected to sew on their own buttons, to their particular design.
Originally the Pearly Kings were ‘costermongers’ which means Street Traders, in old slang, coster (apple) monger (seller).
The Pearly Kings, Queens and Princess’s were always families raising money for charity, their concern being for the poor of the city, as it still is.
In 1911 all 28 boroughs of London had their own Pearly royal family.
This size 42 jacket is yet another rare find of Hornets, a true piece of London.
